The Porsche 356C was one of the last Porsche 356s made before the line was replaced by the new Porsche 911. The end of the line for Porsche’s first mass produced model showed the culmination of the iterative improvements that occurred during the 356’s 17 year run. The T-6 platform with the twin rear grilles used much the same body as the last of the Porsche 356Bs, but in the C, the brakes were upgraded to disc brakes at all 4 wheels and standard engine performance settled into two categories, with the base C and the 95 horsepower SC variant replacing the Super 90 of the 356B series, though the Carrera spec engine was still an option. 1964 also proved to be the best selling year for the 356, despite the introduction of the much more expensive 911 in the same year. Despite its continuing popularity, however, the 356 was phased out of production in 1965. This car was purchased from a friend who was the third owner. Although he had owned it for quite a while, it had been driven sparingly under his ownership and needed some recommissioning work to get it running properly and back on the road, largely due to cleaning out old fuel and rebuilding the carburettors. In that process, the engine came out of the car for perhaps the first time in its history.
The rest of the car is an incredibly well preserved all original rust free, solid example. It has been resprayed once in the original sky blue colour but aside from that and maintenance items, the car is as it was when it came out of the factory. As the most basic version of the Porsche 356C, the car really can’t be described as fast, but it does handle well and is a fantastic touring car and the build quality of this car stands out with no squeaks or rattles at all, solid feeling doors that open and close easily, and an overall high quality feel to everything about it. The original AM/FM Blaupunkt radio is fitted and works perfectly and the original seats, with their spring cushions are still comfortable. There is evidence that the car has been used and driven as patina is perevalent thorughout the car but at no point is anything to the point where it is questionable as to whether the patina adds to the car or detracts from its quality as none of the wear indicates any of the materials are starting to break down. As an original car, it is still fitted with 6 volt electrics and the only real change from stock has been the introduction of relays for the headlights to reduce the load on the headlight switch which is a known weak point on the 356.
